Course intent
Our Lower Intermediate courses are designed to give you confidence dealing with most situations likely to arise when travelling in an area where the language is spoken. You will also be able to understand the main points of everyday written and spoken language, describe experiences and events and talk about your interests.
What will you learn?
Lower Intermediate level spans two years to widen your vocabulary, improve your grammar knowledge and develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Each lesson, there will be some activities working in pairs and groups, to maximise the time you spend speaking the language.
At this level, you will revise previous learning and cover topics such as:
- talking about present, past and future activities
- making travel plans and finding out information
- dealing with everyday issues whilst abroad
Our experienced tutors will give you the guidance and support you need to achieve. They will also give you additional tasks to complete outside of the lesson, to help you make the most of your course.
Who is this course for? Is there anything you need to know before joining?
Lower Intermediate language courses are for those who can already communicate confidently in everyday situations. You may have completed our Beyond Beginners course or have achieved A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages.
For more information, please see our guide to levels for modern foreign languages.
What do you need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
We recommend bringing a pen and paper to every lesson, so you can make notes.
Your tutor will also advise you of any required course books, which typically cost £20-35. They will also be able to recommend other optional resources that you may find useful for your learning.
What can you do when you finish the course?
The Lower Intermediate level runs over two years.
You can then move on to one of our Intermediate courses, which correspond to the upper end of the CEFR B1 Intermediate level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages. B1 is the equivalent of GCSE standard.
Additional Information
We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss any additional support needs you have with our Learner Support Coordinator, who will then contact you as soon as possible. They can discuss your needs with you and talk through the reasonable adjustments we may be able to offer. If you are enrolling within 14 days of the course start date, they may not be able to contact you before your first class.
We are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where everyone is treated with fairness and respect.
