Course overview

Course intent

Our Intermediate courses will give you the language skills to understand and communicate on familiar matters regularly encountered in home, work, travel and leisure situations. You will also learn to converse with greater ease and express your opinions, giving brief reasons and explanations.

What will you learn?

Intermediate level spans three years to consolidate previous learning, extend your vocabulary, improve your grammar knowledge and further develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Course books will be supplemented with authentic materials and there will be opportunities to work in pairs and groups, to maximise the time you spend in conversation and discussing topics.

New content is covered each term and tailored to the needs and interests of the group. Example topics include:

  • Cities and places of interest in the countries where the language is spoken.
  • Customs, traditions, cultural events and differences compared to the UK.
  • Switching easily between tenses to compare the past with present situations and hopes for the future.

Our experienced tutors will give you the guidance and support you need to achieve. They will also give you additional tasks to complete outside of the lesson, to help you make the most of your course.

Who is this course for? Is there anything you need to know before joining?

Intermediate language courses are for those with a good working knowledge of the language who wish to improve accuracy and the ability to express themselves on a range of topics.

You may have completed our Lower Intermediate course or be working towards B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages.

For more information, please see our guide to levels for modern foreign languages.

What do you need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

We recommend bringing a pen and paper to every lesson, so you can make notes.

Your tutor will also advise you of any required course books, which typically cost £20-35. They will also be able to recommend other optional resources that you may find useful for your learning.

What can you do when you finish the course?

The Intermediate level runs over three years, which correspond to the upper end of the CEFR B1 Intermediate level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages. B1 is the equivalent of GCSE standard. You may wish to consolidate your language as this level, move on to Upper Intermediate or join a Conversation course to focus on practising your speaking skills.
