Course intent

This course will help you build the skills, knowledge, and confidence to better understand and support your child’s development, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing. You will gain practical strategies to support learning at home, strengthen your relationship with your child, and feel more confident engaging with your child’s education.

What will you learn?

This course is a FREE online course over four weeks – 2 hour session, for parents and carers whose children (8-18) are being violent and/or aggressive at home. You will explore the possible causes of violent and aggressive behaviour in children, including the myths around this hidden subject. There will be discussion around the child’s understanding of rights and responsibilities and the balance of power in the family.

  • Understand the causes behind a child's aggression at home.
  • Gain knowledge of the family's rights and responsibilities.
  • Explore parent roles and parenting styles.
  • Review ways to live in a calmer home environment

Who is this course for? Is there anything you need to know before joining?

This course is suitable for parents and carers of primary-aged or teenage children living in Surrey, and is delivered online via Zoom

What do you need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You will need to:

  • Have your camera on
  • Provide a mobile phone number and email address when you enrol so that we can contact you about your course.
  • Please attend all sessions
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A computer/laptop/tablet or phone with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome), microphone and camera
  • A pen and paper
  • Check your email for detailed joining instructions two days before course starts.
  • Fill out the `Getting to know you` form and fill out `Tell us what you think` form
  • Contact us on family.learning@surreycc.gov.uk if you have any questions

Please do not enrol on more than 3 x workshop and courses within family learning

What can you do when you finish the course?

At the end of this course we will give you details of what you can move on to next, for example volunteering, further courses with Surrey Adult Learning, a college or employment

Additional Information

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss any additional support needs you have with our Learner Support Coordinator, who will then contact you as soon as possible. They can discuss your needs with you and talk through the reasonable adjustments we may be able to offer. If you are enrolling within 14 days of the course start date, they may not be able to contact you before your first class.
