Course intent

A Friday morning lecture studying the life of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and how his passions shaped a kingdom.

What will I learn?

Ludwig I reigned from 1825 until his abdication in 1848, the second king of the German kingdom of Bavaria. Ludwig was a patron of the arts, building several neo-classical buildings in Munich but he is also remembered for his encouragement of the industrialisation of Bavaria. In later years King Ludwig’s reputation was severely damaged by his affair with the Irish born dancer, Eliza Gilbert, better known as Lola Montez.

Learners may wish to further their knowledge by attending other courses in aspects of history.
