Course overview

Course intent

Ideal for anyone interested in archaeology, ancient technology, or the lived experience of the Roman world, this lecture offers a fascinating window into Roman comfort, innovation, and identity in Britain.

What will I learn?

Key sites for investigation will be villas at Bignor and Lullingstone and the palace at Fishbourne.

These sites show similar Roman building techniques, which the Romans brought with them as they expanded their huge empire, but each villa has its individual style of decoration, notable in some fabulous mosaics, and each contributes to our understanding of Roman lifestyle in Britannia and of Roman religious beliefs.
