Drawing & Illustration - All Abilities

Course intent

Whether you are a beginner or already have some experience of drawing and illustration, you will learn the knowledge and skills needed to develop and expand your range of techniques and design skills, gaining a deeper understanding of the range of techniques and processes. What will we cover?

On this creative course we will explore drawing & some illustration techniques. Focusing mainly on the drawing aspect we will cover such principles as

  • Line
  • Tone
  • Proportion
  • perspective
  • sketching, pencil drawing & full shading
  • pen & ink and cross-hatching.
  • Examples of subjects covered are still life, landscape, animals, figure drawing and portraiture

The tutor teaches by way of step-by-step demonstrations so you will be able to watch each process before attempting any stage yourself.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

For Beginners, Improvers and anyone who needs to chill out doing something completely different from their everyday work. From those with little or no experience of drawing to those who have practiced but need a refresher to get motivated again. As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

For the first session bring

  • a pad of A3 cartridge paper. Pick a minimum weight of 130gsm (not photocopier paper which is 80 gsm) The number is written on the sketch pad, the higher the number, the thicker the paper. You do not need paper heavier than 220 g/m2 if cartridge paper.
  • Or watercolour paper that you already own.
  • a range of harder pencils (HB, H, 2H) and eraser (and whatever drawing materials you may already have purchased)

Other materials needed during the course will be discussed in advance of the lesson where those materials are needed; however materials you will definitely use, include pen and ink.

What can I do when I finish the course?

To progress on to other courses in painting, drawing, calligraphy and bookbinding. Many other opportunities to take up other longer art & craft classes meet people and make friends. You could also attend art lectures such as Art History - Women Painters through the centuries, Saturdays starting 7th May (Zoom) and Art History - How did they get famous - Artist Communities throughout the UK 4 weeks starting on the 11th June (Zoom).
