Lights in selected roads are switched off between 1am and 5am.
The street light remains on if one or more of the following applies. If the street light is:
- on a main road.
- in the town centre where there are lots of businesses open late/people around.
- near a speed hump, chicane, zebra crossings, pedestrian traffic lights and roundabouts.
- on a road where CCTV is in place to reduce crime.
- on a road where the Council's road safety team or the Police believe it is needed.
In addition, where buses or trains run after midnight the lights may remain on for a later time or left on all night. In the case of railway stations our intention is that the lights from the station to the main roads are on only. We will not leave all the lights on to allow for all possible journeys that might be made on foot or by car from the station to the destination.
We made the decision to implement part-night lighting across Surrey in 2016. More information can be found in the part-night street lighting report.
