Woodland Trust road closure Headley Road, Ashtead

Update 11 March

Work will start on Monday 14 March and be expected to take four weeks to complete, the road will be closed for 24 hours during the entire works.

The works include

  • Drainage Crossings
  • Tree Stump removal that encroaches the carriageway
  • Kerbing
  • Full width surfacing and re profiling of the carriageway
  • Installation of new bellmouth
  • Site / Verge clearance

Works are to be competed under a road closure. This is because it is not possible to complete works safely and provide the required widths as per the Streetworks Safety Code of Practise for live traffic to pass the site and maintain safety for both operatives and road users. Unfortunately the duration is longer than hoped due to working hour restrictions that have been applied through the planning approval by the local District Council.

The official diversion will be signed via Farm Lane, Park Lane, A24, Reigate Road/Mill Way, Church Road/Tilley Lane and vice versa.

The closure is approved to be in place 24 hours a day seven days a week and the working hours, agreed in the planning constraints, are 8am to 5pm.

These works are not being carried out by Surrey County Council; they are part of works for the Woodland Trust .

Background to the works

Woodlands Trust began work on 13 December 2021 and successfully completed the work to create access to the new car park before the Christmas break. Early in the new year, the appointed contractors then progressed with the second phase of the work, which included the earthworks and drainage, such as digging swales, laying the sub-base for the car park and the tracks, and the kerbing.

The last phases of work are the surfacing and finishing works, and the work required along Headley Road. This includes widening the road, improving visibility and adding road markings. As previously advised, in order to complete the work along the road, the road will be closed for up to 4 weeks. The surfacing and finishing works in the car park itself will then be carried out shortly afterwards, with an expected completion date of mid-May.

Following a site meeting, we liaised with the contractors regarding closure of the Public Bridleway that runs adjacent to Langley Vale Road, and the majority of the trenching and cabling work will now be undertaken on Woodland Trust land and not through the centre of the bridleway. Please note there will now only be two short partial closures of the bridleway (near to the crossing and near to the ancient woodland shaw line close to the car park field) to enable this electrical work. The Public Bridleway is planned to be closed on 23, 24 and 25 March.
