Highways England M23 smart motorway works - closures from 13 May

Highways England have a series of road closures taking place from the 13 May to carry out work as part of their M23 smart motorways project.

Monday 13 May, 10pm to 4am: full closure of M23 both directions and the M25/M23 junction

Highways England is installing a gantry at junction 8 of the M23 - the junction with the M25. This means that both the M23 north and southbound carriageways will be closed, as well all the entry and exit slips from the M25. The diversion route for southbound traffic will be via junction 6 of the M25 and following the A22 and A264 before joining the M23 at junction 10. The diversion route for northbound traffic is the reverse.

Tuesday 14 May, 10pm to 4am: overnight closures southbound M23

Highways England is closing the southbound carriageway of the M23 between junctions 8 and 10. The diversion route will be via junction 6 of the M25 and following the A22 and A264 before re-joining the M23 at junction 10. The M23 northbound carriageway will remain open.

Wednesday 15 May, 10pm to 4am: overnight closures northbound M23

Highways England is closing the northbound carriageway of the M23 between junctions 8 and 10. The diversion route is the reverse of the above. The M23 southbound carriageway will remain open.

Thursday 16 May, 9pm to 4am: overnight closures northbound M23 and Gatwick Spur

Highways England is closing the northbound carriageway of the M23 between junctions 8 and 10. The Gatwick Spur entry slip will also be closed.

A diversion will be via junction 10 of the M23 and following the A264 and A22 before joining at junction 6 of the M25. The diversion route for traffic heading to Gatwick Airport is from junction 10 of the M23 and following the A2011, A23, Airport Way and into Gatwick Airport.

Friday 17 May to Sunday 19 May: M23 junction 9 and Gatwick Spur closure

Junction 9 of the M23, including both north and southbound exit slips and the Gatwick Spur will be closed to traffic between 10pm on Friday 17 May until midday on Sunday 19 May. There will be no entry to Gatwick Airport from junction 9. The M23 will remain open, but access to Gatwick Airport will be via junction 10.

All diversion routes will be clearly signed. For more information contact: M23J8_10Smart@highwaysengland.co.uk.
