Traffic light refurbishment works on the A246 Guildford Road, Guildford

What are we doing?

We will be replacing and improving the traffic lights on the A246 Guildford Road at the junction with Beech Avenue. This work is now urgent and necessary as it has been delayed due to utility works in the area. Further information can be found on the residents leaflet (PDF).

How this will affect you:

These works are due to start on Monday 9 December and to take two weeks.

  • Beech Avenue will be closed for the entre duration of the work. This is due to the narrow road which can not be opened for our worker safety. The road cannot be opened up outside of the working hours.
  • The A246 and The Street will have lane closures in place and have temporary three way lights controlling them.

The works will be carried out from Monday to Saturday to reduce the impact and time on the road.

Hours of work

  • Monday to Friday: 8am to 4pm
  • Saturday 9am to 4pm

Information for residents and businesses

There will be lane restrictions to carry out these works on Guildford Road. Beech Avenue will be closed during these works as we cannot safely carry out these works without closing the road at the junction with the A246. A signed diversion will be in place.

We will be replacing all of the traffic light equipment as it has become obsolete and is in poor condition.

There will be 24hr temporary signals in place during the works.

Frequently asked questions -

Why are you doing the works now? Can't they be postponed?

We have had to postpone these works several times for utility works in the area over the last three summers. The work on these lights is now urgent and cannot be pushed back any further.

Can you delay the start of the works to the school holidays?

If we were to delay the start of the works the duration would be considerably extended due to the Christmas shut down. The preferable option is for the road to be closed from the 9 December for two weeks; rather than starting later and being extended.

Delaying the start means that the works will be placed on hold during the Christmas break and that the works affect many more road users.

Delays in work

Our work is sometimes delayed by bad weather. We will keep you updated on any changes via the advance warning signs.

Noise

There will be some noise but we will try to keep this to a minimum.
