Maintenance of road markings

Road markings convey important information and requirements to road users about what they can or cannot do. When used appropriately, they make a vital contribution to safety and traffic management.

In addition, where appropriate, we may introduce new road markings, which include access protection markings (H bars), disabled bays or new parking controls and restrictions.

Cyclical road lining refreshment

In order to keep road lines clear and visible, we have a routine programme to refresh our existing markings.

Our works programme for 2018/19 has not been set yet. This page will be updated with the 2018/19 programme once it has been set. Please check back on this webpage for updates.

All work is subject to weather, road conditions and programmes can change with short notice.

We also have an ad-hoc lining programme for refreshing lines as needed.

Lines on resurfaced roads

Where we have resurfaced a road, we aim to replace all the road markings within 6 weeks. We can take longer on certain roads due to parked cars, weather and other factors that affect us being able to get the lines down.

Road markings on trunk roads and motorways (A3, M25, M23, A30 and M3) are the responsibility of Highways England.

Who carries out the work?

All of our lining work is carried out by our contractor Wilson and Scott.
