Overnight works - September 2026
We will be carrying out works overnight between 14 September and 3 October to complete the remaining elements of the Croydon Road improvement project. Works include:
- Road resurfacing
- Repairs to paving and kerbs
- Additional drainage improvements
- Installation of signage, bollards and planters
- Road markings and white lining
Working at night allows us to reduce disruption during the day for road users, residents and businesses. We understand that night-time working may cause some disturbance. Where possible, we will carry out the noisiest activities earlier in the evening and aim to finish these noisy works by midnight.
14 September to 26 September
Between 8pm and 6am, one lane of Croydon Road will be closed between Colin Road and the Station Avenue roundabout. Temporary traffic lights will be used to manage traffic. The traffic lights will be removed each morning, and the road will fully reopen outside these hours.
Access to Colin Road and the Croydon Road service road (D1431) will be maintained throughout this period.
28 September to 3 October
Between 8pm and 6am, Croydon Road, Station Avenue and the roundabout at the junction of Station Avenue and Godstone Road will be closed to vehicles. This closure is needed so that resurfacing works can be completed safely. Pedestrian access to homes and businesses will be maintained at all times.
Parking bays on Croydon Road between Colin Road and the Station Avenue roundabout will be suspended overnight while works are taking place. Please do not leave vehicles in suspended bays during the works. Any vehicles left parked may need to be towed to allow the work to be carried out safely.
Bus services
14 September to 26 September
- Buses will be able to travel through the works area.
- Some bus stops within the works area may need to be temporarily closed.
28 September to 3 October
- Buses will not be able to pass through the road closure.
- Information about temporary bus service changes will be published on this webpage where possible.
Bus operators have been made aware of the road closure, to see if any of your bus services are affected, please visit the Transport for London website.

Works information
The project began in February 2024 and has delivered a range of improvements to make the area safer, greener and more attractive for residents, businesses and visitors. These improvements include:
- Surface water drainage repairs
- Wider and improved footways with new paving
- New trees, planting and rain gardens to help manage rainfall and reduce flooding
- Changes to parking and bus bays, including two electric vehicle charging spaces
- Sustainable drainage systems beneath footways and parking bays
- New benches and seating areas
To complete the project, we need to carry out:

20 mph speed limit
We also propose to implement a 20 mph speed limit on the following roads:
- Farningham Road
- Commonwealth Road
- Mount Pleasant Road
- Colin Road
- Croydon Road
- Highfield Drive
- Crescent Road
- Timber Hill Road
- Station Avenue
- Church Hill
- Stafford Road
- Godstone Road
- Clareville Road
- Eothen Close
- Harestone Hill
- Harestone Valley Road
The Caterham 20mph zone map (PDF) shows the area the speed limit will be implemented. Drivers will be alerted to the 20 mph speed limit by a combination of signs and road markings.
Introducing a 20 mph default speed limit on these roads is intended to:
- Reduce vehicle speeds on our roads, particularly on those with a record of vehicles exceeding the speed limit
- Reduce the number and severity of accidents
- Create environments that make walking and cycling safer and more appealing
- Lead to an overall improvement in the liveability of neighbourhoods
- Aid the council's wider aim to improve air quality
A statutory consultation regarding the implementation of the 20 mph speed limit took place earlier this year. We will update this webpage with more information on outcomes and next steps in due course.
Consultation and engagement
In 2020, Tandridge District Council consulted with local residents, businesses and stakeholders. The feedback received helped shape the plans and development of the final designs. Road safety audits and technical appraisals were also carried out by Surrey County Council.
On Thursday 2 March 2023, a Croydon Road event was held and plans for Croydon Road's new look and feel were shared with members of the public. A panel of project experts were also in attendance to answer a wide variety of questions from the public.

Background
Surrey County Council, Tandridge District Council and the Business Improvement District are making changes to Caterham which aim to make the area more attractive for people to live and work in, as well as boosting the economy and creating more jobs.
These improvements are part of Tandridge District Councils bigger project to deliver the aspirations of the Caterham Masterplan.
