Disabled parking - Blue Badge

Using your Blue Badge and where to park

Using your Blue Badge

To find out where you can park in Surrey, please read our Guidance on parking with a Blue Badge in Surrey.

You can also use your Blue Badge for on-street parking in counties across the UK. However, there can be some specific rules in some areas, so it is best to check with the local council responsible for parking before you travel.

Who can use a Blue Badge

Only the badge holder can use and benefit from a Blue Badge, so it should only be displayed if the holder is travelling in the vehicle as a driver or passenger, or if someone is collecting or dropping off the badge holder.

As a badge holder, you must not allow other people to use the badge when you are not in the vehicle, even if they are doing something for you, such as shopping or collecting your prescription. Similarly, you should not give your badge to people visiting you or to anyone for any other purpose than when you are travelling and parking in the vehicle.

Misuse of a badge is a criminal offense that could lead to a £1,000 fine and the cancellation of the badge.

Displaying your Blue Badge

Your Blue Badge must be displayed on the dashboard of the car you are travelling in, where it can be clearly read through the front windscreen when the vehicle is parked. The badge should be placed face upwards, showing the hologram, not your photograph, which should not visible through the windscreen.

Make sure the front of the badge is clean and undamaged so that it is easy to read. Worn or faded badges should be replaced. Find out how to Replace a Blue Badge. If you display a badge that cannot be read, and a parking officer cannot see that it is current, you may be given a parking fine, according to the parking regulations for the road where you are parked.

You should not use the badge to allow non-disabled people to take advantage of the benefits while you sit in the car.

Blind people should make sure that anyone displaying the badge on their behalf has placed it correctly to avoid a parking fine.

Guidance on where you can park with a Blue Badge in Surrey

A Blue Badge applies only to on-street parking, it does not necessarily provide free parking in car parks, such as those located in shopping centres. You should check the guidance for any car park (Parkopedia) before travelling.

Where you can park for free with a Blue Badge

A Blue Badge helps you to park close to your destination, either as a passenger or driver by allowing you to park:

  • in allocated disabled bays and on the road
  • on single or double yellow lines (up to 3 hours)
  • in any car park for the maximum stay (in line with its terms and conditions)
