1. How do I find out if a road is publicly maintained (adopted)?

The road network overlay on the Surrey interactive map shows those highways that are maintained at public expense.

Copies of the Register of Publicly Maintained Highways are available to view at County Hall reception and at each of the borough or district council offices.

We can give you written confirmation of whether a road is publicly maintained or not. You need to send us a formal written request, either by email or post, and pay the appropriate fee.

2. How do I confirm the extent of the highway? Does my property directly abut the highway (boundary)?

We can give you written confirmation of highway extent. You need to send us a formal written request, either by email or post, and pay the appropriate fee.

3. How do I carry out a local search?

Local searches are submitted in full at the relevant borough or district council. They will contact us for the answers to the highway & transportation questions.

We can produce a highways response to a local search. You need to send us a formal written request, either by email or post, and pay the appropriate fee. We do not carry out searches on the telephone or in person.

4. I want to know about highway proposals/schemes in Surrey

We keep records of all of the approved and current rail and road proposals in Surrey. We can provide details and updates if you send us a formal written request, either by email or post, and pay the appropriate fee.

If you have a query about road works, you can view the roadworks map for all the latest planned roadworks information in Surrey

5. Who do I need to speak to regarding Section 38/278 agreements and/or the adoption of new estate roads?

We can provide updates and copies of current and past Section 38/278 agreements.

If you have an enquiry about starting an agreement you should contact Transportation Development Planning.

6. I have a query relating to a Definitive Public Right of Way

You can contact the Highways information team for extracts of the definitive map and definitive statement to confirm the location of a public right of way.

For other enquiries about public rights of way, contact the Countryside Access Team (formally Rights of Way Team).

7. I live on a private road and want to restrict traffic. Will the council help me?

This is not a council matter as the road is private. However, Transport Development Planning may be able to advise with regards to positioning a road gate.

8. I have an issue with parking. Who can help me?

If you have any questions about parking enforcement and infringements you should contact your district or borough council or Surrey Police.

For queries about new or proposed parking restrictions please view the parking news and updates page.

9. I would like to report a highway defect (such as a pothole, faulty street lamp, flooding/blocked drain)

You can report faults online or alternatively you can contact us.

10. Where can I carry out a drainage search?

Drainage searches are submitted at the relevant water authority (whoever you pay your water bill to).
