There's never been a better time to make healthy changes

The Coronavirus pandemic has affected the whole country; for almost everyone, life has had to fundamentally change. But it has also prompted many of us to reflect and think more seriously about our health. What's more, lockdown has shown many of us that we're able to make changes to our lives and sustain them.

The national "Better Health" campaign aims to support people to achieve a healthy weight. Many of us gain weight gradually over time and modern life doesn't always make it easy. But extra weight causes pressure to build up around vital organs, making it harder for the body to fight against diseases like cancer, heart disease and now Covid-19.

Where can I get help?

The Better Health webpage provides tools to help people manage their weight loss including the NHS 12-week weight loss plan. The plan, available both online and via a new app, promotes evidence-based safe and sustainable weight loss. It helps users make healthier choices and enables them to keep track of their calorie intake, portions of fruit and veg and physical activity levels and also teaches skills to prevent weight gain.

The webpage also features the free "How are you?" online health quiz, designed to help adults reappraise their health and guide them to relevant support, and provides links to proven apps such as Couch to 5K – a training plan which helps people gradually progress towards a five kilometre run – and Easy Meals, which offers tasty easy meal ideas using healthier foods.
