Want to lead a healthier life?

Published: 29 January 2020

Here's three top tips that might help

Whether your goal is to eat better, exercise more, lose weight, cut down on alcohol, stop smoking or improve your mental health, these three simple and practical tips can help you lead a healthy lifestyle. For you, for them, for the future.

1. Set goals and make a plan

Once you know what goals you want to achieve, find out what barriers are in your way and think of how you can realistically overcome them. You might want to exercise more, but don't have any extra time in your day to do it. Try building exercise into your routine, by going for a walk on your lunch break, or taking the stairs instead of using the lift. You might want to cut down on alcohol but enjoy a glass of wine in the evenings. Instead of cutting out the drink altogether you could plan to have some drink-free days each week.

2. Keep a record

To help you stay on track, think about recording your progress in a diary or app. It could be keeping a record of how many alcoholic drinks you've had, how active you've been or what things you've done each day to improve your mood. Keeping a diary can also help boost your confidence by keeping a record of your achievements.

3. Get support

There are several ways you can motivate yourself, from digital resources, to face-to-face support from a service, friend or family. Many free support services, such as the local stop smoking service, offer face-to-face from an expert to offer tailored advice to help you reach your goal. By talking to friends or family members, you might find you both want to achieve the same goal and can encourage each other.
