Combat recycling confusion with the Surrey Recycles app

Confused about what can and can't be recycled? For quick and easy answers, download the Surrey Recycles app and search by item and postcode.

Recycling right helps the environment and saves money that could be spent on essential services. Did you know, if incorrect items make it into your recycling bin it can result in the whole truck load being rejected which creates unnecessary waste and extra costs?

Common items causing the most confusion that should go in your rubbish bin include:

  • plastic film used to wrap food
  • takeaway coffee cups and containers
  • disposable nappies
  • polystyrene.

Clothes, textiles, food and garden waste can all be recycled but they don't belong in your recycling bin. Recycle your clothes and textiles using a local collection service or take them to your nearest recycling bank. .

Food waste should be placed in your separate food bin and garden waste can be composted at home or collected when you subscribe to your local service.

Food and drink packaging like plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays and takeaway meal containers needs to be emptied and rinsed clean before placing in your recycling bin. This isn't done at the recycling facility and dirty containers can contaminate other recycling and mean the whole lot gets rejected.

As well as the app there is also an online search tool which is now available in nine languages. Why not visit The Surrey Environment website today and try it out?.
