Recycled paint shop set to open at Guildford Community Recycling Centre
Have you got full or mostly full tins of reusable water-based paint hanging around in your shed or house from that last decorating job? Well now you can recycle them.
From Monday, 27 September, a new recycled paint shop will open at the Guildford Community Recycling Centre (CRC) located in the Slyfield Industrial Estate on Moorfield Road, GU1 1RU. Full or mostly full tins of reusable, water-based paint that are taken to the CRC for disposal will be set aside for residents to have in exchange for a suggested donation to Macmillan Cancer Support. This new scheme will keep valuable resources from going to waste, all while raising money for a great cause.
Supporting Macmillian Cancer Support
Macmillan Cancer Support is a long-time charity partner of SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, who operate the 15 recycling centres in Surrey on behalf of Surrey County Council. All donations through the paint shop will go directly to the charity, helping them to continue their work supporting individuals and families impacted by a cancer diagnosis.
Diverting waste from disposal
Previously, tins of water-based paint sent to the recycling centres in Surrey would be sent for disposal rather than recycling. The team at SUEZ sat down to review the different materials accepted through the recycling centres and consider ways to divert even more waste away from disposal and improve recycling.
If the new paint shop proves popular with residents it could be expanded to the Revive reuse shops across Surrey, currently open on site at the Community Recycling Centres in Earlswood, Leatherhead, Shepperton, and Witley. The Revive shops help reduce waste by selling second-hand home and sporting goods with 10% of proceeds donated to Surrey-based charities.
If you have a DIY or upcycling project in mind, stop into the paint shop first – a fresh coat of paint doesn't have to cost the earth.
