2020 cycling event cancelled

It has been confirmed that the 2020 Prudential RideLondon festival of cycling is cancelled. This decision has been taken by London authorities after engagement with partners involved in the planning of the event.

Surrey County Council fully support the decision to cancel this year's Prudential RideLondon-Surrey cycling event, which was due to pass through Surrey on Sunday 16 August 2020. Our priority is the health and safety of Surrey residents and an event of this size with the number of participants, spectators and key workers on the ground managing logistics, prevents such an event being safe.

Future of the event

With regard to the future of Surrey hosting future Prudential Ride London-Surrey events, we are still committed to hosting the event again in Surrey in 2021. We will need to review operationally how the impact of Coronavirus will affect the mechanics of hosting a mass participation event of this scale. These implications will become more evident as we all begin to understand the legacy of Coronavirus and its impact on society.

Following the consultation with residents which took place earlier this year, a cabinet decision has yet to be made on the event continuing to pass through Surrey beyond 2021. This was due to be reviewed at April Cabinet but due to the Coronavirus crisis, the RideLondon-Surrey Cabinet decision was postponed, as other more immediate decisions needed to be actioned. It is now scheduled to be considered at a July Cabinet meeting.

The consultation which asked for views on whether Surrey should continue to host the event attracted a large response with over 9,000 people completing the survey. Over 80% of people that answered the survey either lived or worked in Surrey. The results of that survey will be used to inform the July Cabinet decision, and those results will be shared as part of the associated Cabinet report.

Were you due to participate?

If you were due to participate in this year's event further information is available on the official website here in a Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Questions and Answers section.

Hugh Brasher Event Director of Prudential RideLondon said: "We know that there will be many, many questions from riders, charities and others and we ask you to please bear with us as we work through all the detail. We expect to be in a position to provide full updates to participants and charities by the middle of June. We will also post regular updates on our website and social media channels."
