Community Spirit in 2021
2020 was tough for everyone in Surrey due to COVID-19 but if there's something positive worth carrying with us is into the New Year it's the amazing community response that came about as a result of the crisis. We really were Surrey together.
If you're pondering over your News Year's resolutions and wondering how you can get involved in helping your community in 2021 we've highlighted some of the ways you can make a positive difference.
Volunteering in your community
Did you know there are voluntary action centres across the county where communities have been working together to help those neighbours in need. The Councils for Voluntary Service (CVSs) and Volunteer Centres are our trusted partners for coordinating volunteers in Surrey. To find out how you can help, visit the I want to help web page.
New community groups have cropped up all over social media, via Facebook and the Nextdoor App, all working together to look out for each other in this difficult time, why not join in the conversation?
Giving back to the environment
We've made a commitment to tackling climate change here at Surrey County Council. To see how you can make a difference to the climate check out your own carbon footprint on the climate change web page.
Part of this climate strategy is pledging to plant 1.2 million trees in Surrey. More details and how you can get involved can be found on our previous Surrey Matters article - Help save the planet and plant a tree.
Support has been flooding to foodbanks across the county, whether via volunteers, donations or pledges to start up whole new branches. Check out the Surrey Information Point website to find local food banks in your area.
Your Fund Surrey – let's make it happen
Surrey residents have been letting us know what they would do with £100 million to improve their local area. We have it all plotted on an interactive map where residents decide where the money goes. See what suggestions have been made in your area by checking out the Your Fund Surrey interactive map.
No New Year resolution would be complete without pledging to get healthy in 2021. If keeping yourself healthy is on your to-do list check out the Healthy Surrey web page for health and wellbeing tips.
Unfortunately COVID-19 will still be very much with us in 2021 so remember, hands, face, space. Keep doing your bit to keeping Surrey safe, for all our communities.
