Woking Library - a journey through time and space

space traveller imageWoking library and friends invite you to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing. Together we will explore time and space through art, movement, science and music. Join us for a jam-packed two weeks of events.

Monday 12 August to Saturday 24 August

  • HG Wells display - come and see amazing artefacts on loan from Surrey History Centre.
  • Design your own planet library competition.
    You have discovered a new planet. Show us what does it look like? Enter our competition to win some of "out of this world" prizes. Pick up an entry form from Woking library. Closing date Saturday 24 August.

Monday 12 August

Create your own crop mark

  • 1pm to 4pm.

Join a real archaeologist to make your own crop marks!

Find out how archaeologists use pictures taken from space to spot changes in the grass and crops. Crops grow differently depending on what is beneath the ground. This can mean there might be and exciting new site lying just beneath the surface for us to discover. You can create your own crop mark and take it home.

Tuesday 13 August

50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

  • 10.30am to 12 noon.
  • 1.30pm to 3pm.

Ever fancied trying some science yourselves? Wondered about what you can see in the night sky? Or wondered how the things around you work?

The Department of Physics from the University of Surrey will be at Woking Library to help with these questions and more. Here you can come and ask us any physics or astronomy questions, have a go at some science experiments and get hands on with physics through everyday objects such as Lego.

Wednesday 14 August

Space rhymetime/storytime

  • 11am to 11.30am.
  • 2.30pm to 3pm.

Space storytime

  • 4pm to 5pm.

Science storytime and play for pre-schoolers aged (about) 3 to 5.

Join our storyteller for a tale about a girl called Molly who wants to learn about the friendly moon in the night time sky. Suitable for little ones and grownups who are prepared to sing, play and have fun together as we learn about our nearest neighbour in space. Children must be accompanied by adults.

Moon Buggy walk

Active Surrey would like to invite you to Moon Buggy Walk!

Join us for an energising (moon) buggy walk along the canal before you sit down and relax for Story/Rhyme Time. Non-buggy walkers very welcome to join us too!

Pilates taster session for adults

Pilates works on your alignment, breathing and core strength, to help keep your body in balance. It's great for posture, flexibility and the feel-good factor! If you are aged 19+ - this is a session for you!

Tai Chi taster session for adults

Cupcake decorating for adults

Using cutters, piping bags, fondant and buttercream decorate 6 space themed cupcakes with rockets and planets to take home to enjoy. If you are aged 19+ - this is a session for you!

Create a pop-up space book

  • 10am to 11am.

Digital maker day

Active Surrey would like to invite you to try yourself in one of our indoor cycling sessions.

Push your limits with a smile on your face! Ride to your favourite tracks climbing hills and sprinting back down them again, or casually ride along to the beat of the music. It is designed for all abilities but you will be sure to get a sweat on and get those jelly legs! If you are aged 16+ - this is a session for you. Please, bring some water, a towel and do not wear any loose clothes.

Make a celestial character for adults.

  • 10am to 12 noon.

Surrey Adult Learning would like to invite you to take part in a session to create a celestial character.

Be inspired and learn how to sculpt a lovely celestial character using only a felting needle, a handful of wool tops and a little imagination. Needle felting is a calming and rewarding technique and you will be amazed by what can be achieved in just a couple of hours. If you are aged 19+ - this is a session for you!

Make a mixed media moon for adults

Storytime with Mama G

  • 11am to 12 noon.

Join Mama G, combining the magic of panto, drag and storytelling, to conclude our journey through time and space. Mama G will take listeners on an out-of-this world adventure and remind everyone to appreciate the beautiful world we live in and the amazing people we share the stars with.
