Over 700 reading groups in Surrey are supported by Surrey libraries. We offer a specialist service, providing multiple copies of books, including brand new titles, to private and library-based groups. If you use Twitter try Read, Watch, Play, join us every month as we explore a different theme through reading, watching or playing.
Please see the following for further information:
- Starting a reading group – including borrowing guidelines for book loans to reading groups.
- Websites for reading groups – both new and established.
- Existing reading groups – some existing reading groups in Surrey are listed on a national database. To join a reading group that meets in a Surrey Library please either ask in your library or email ReadingGroups@surreycc.gov.uk
Surrey libraries run book related events, such as author visits, workshops and health and wellbeing events throughout the year.
Historically Surrey Libraries have enjoyed audiences with Lucy Worsley, Philippa Gregory and Simon Scarrow. We have presented Lynda Bellingham and Nicholas Owen, considered murder with Simon Brett and Peter James and enjoyed nature with Philip Hoare and David Hempleman-Adams.
New and popular books
New and popular titles are promoted on our website, and we also offer the facility for reading groups to review books they have read, and read reviews left by others online.
Surrey Libraries do not have specific sets of books kept solely for reading groups. Groups can use any title in Surrey stock as long as there are at least 20 copies in circulation. To help you choose, please find below a list of general fiction titles which exceed this criterion. This list is not exhaustive and staff at your local library will gladly make recommendations. If you have checked our catalogue and find we have insufficient copies of the book you want, please ask us to consider purchasing more copies.
