Surrey's countryside has a rich variety of landscapes and habitats, including two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (the Surrey Hills and the High Weald). Its desirability as a place to live, work and visit is closely linked to its pleasant rural environment.
Our landscape has seven distinct regional character types: Thames Valley, Thames Basin Heaths, Thames Basin Lowlands, North Downs, Wealden Greensand, Low Weald and High Weald. Geology, landform, land use and climate combine to determine the vegetation cover which, in turn, creates specific landscapes like heathland, woodland and agricultural land.
Each of these landscapes has many distinctive plants and wildlife that help to make up their unique character.
