Tom's first taste of life at Surrey was as a student when he supported the finance team during the school holidays as part of his Business A-Level. He so enjoyed his time here that he decided to apply for a full time role as a Support Assistant within Adult Services. He got the job and hasn't looked back in four years.
Tom is currently coming to the end of a maternity cover placement as a Support Officer and says what a rewarding experience it has been. "I enjoy the fact that my job involves helping people – whether it's allocating funding to a service user for a new laptop or making sure someone has the necessary resources to arrange additional care. What I do helps to empower people and to improve their lives and I find that hugely satisfying.
But it's not just service users who have benefited from working with Tom and he has recently supported a colleague in becoming a Community Support Worker. He counts it as one of his proudest achievements since joining Surrey and his involvement was critical to this person achieving this particular professional ambition.
In the four years he has been with Surrey, Tom has seen major changes to the systems he uses and says that some of the new systems about to be introduced will enable him to perform at a higher level. " It's been a challenge getting to grips with some of the finance systems they use here but now that our Adults Integrated System is about to be implemented, I can see the service we provide becoming even more effective."
