Support with heating oil costs
If you use heating oil to heat your home and are struggling with costs, you may be able to get financial support.
You may be eligible if you:
- Use heating oil as your main source of heating.
- Receive benefits or have a household income below £28,860 a year.
Support is limited and subject to eligibility checks. Only one application can be made per household.

Heating oil support letters
This summer, we are writing to Surrey households that may qualify for heating oil support but have not yet applied.
Working with Policy in Practice and local councils, we have identified households that may be eligible and want to make sure they are aware of the support available.
What can you do?
- Compare prices from different suppliers before ordering.
- Look for local oil-buying groups, which may offer lower prices.
- Keep copies of quotes, emails and receipts.
- Check carefully if a supplier changes the price of an order after it has been agreed.
Support for people using alternative fuels
If you heat your home using heating oil, Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), coal, biomass or wood, Citizens Advice offers information and support. This may include advice on grants, local hardship funds and improving your home's energy efficiency.
Report unfair pricing
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating reports of:
- Orders being cancelled and reissued at higher prices.
- Unexpected increases to automatic delivery prices.
- Sharp rises in quotes over a short period.
These price increases have been linked to global events affecting fuel supply and wholesale fuel costs
