Notice

Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, Section 14(1) & (2)
The Surrey County Council
Public Footpath 460 (Betchworth)
Temporary Prohibition of Traffic Order 2026

On 21 August 2026 Surrey County Council made the above-mentioned temporary order, the effect of which is to prohibit all traffic on foot or by any other means from entering or proceeding along that length of Public Footpath 460 (Betchworth) which extends for 40 metres over a railway footbridge from point A at Grid ref: 520528 150938 to point B at Grid ref: 520554 150907, and which is marked by a solid bold line on plan no. 3/1/39/H19.

The order is necessary on the grounds of public safety due to the timber deck of the railway footbridge requiring replacement.

The closure will be in operation for a period of six months from 26 August 2026 or until completion of the works, if sooner. That period can be extended by the Secretary of State for Transport if required.

The temporary closure will only be in operation when appropriate road traffic signs are displayed on site by the county council or an authorised person acting on its behalf. Access to properties will not be affected.

The alternative route for traffic from the southern end of the closure is generally south-east via Public Footpath 460 (Betchworth), south-west along the A25/Reigate Road, north-east via Public Footpath 48 (Betchworth), north-west via Public Footpath 47 (Brockham), north-east via Public Footpath 45 (Brockham) and Public Footpath 476a (Betchworth), then south-east via Public Footpath 460 (Betchworth), as shown by the black and white line on the attached plan. Total length of diversion: 1850 metres.

The alternative route from the northern end of the closure will be the reverse of the above.

“The Surrey County Council Public Footpath 460 (Betchworth) Temporary Prohibition of Traffic Order 2026” was made by the county council under Section 14(1) & (2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
