Sounds Lab is an exciting, interactive workshop where groups work together to record and edit sounds. They create original music using digital music tools such as Ableton Live and Push (software and hardware). Participants explore found sounds, instruments, and voices. They use modern music-making techniques in a welcoming space. You do not need any experience, just bring your ideas.
What happens in a session
Using Ableton Live and Push, participants explore how sounds become music. They'll record and sample found sounds, voices, or instruments they already play. They'll experiment with digital production techniques and, where appropriate, develop lyrics or spoken word ideas. The focus is on play, experimentation, and collaboration. Everyone contributes to a shared creative outcome.
Who it is for
Sounds Lab is suitable for primary, secondary, Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) schools, and community settings. It works well for full classes, small groups, and mixed-ability groups. The sessions support young people who enjoy practical activities and creative teamwork. No previous experience is necessary. However, participants with musical experience are encouraged to bring their instruments for recording.
Why schools choose Sounds Lab
Schools choose Sounds Lab because it is easy to run in a classroom or hall. It helps pupils who may not see themselves as musical to take part and grow in confidence. It also enables more musically experienced students to explore their creativity and expand their understanding of music production. This gives teachers a clear model for using music technology with whole classes.
What schools need to provide
Schools only need to provide a classroom or hall and access to power. Surrey Arts provide all the equipment needed for the session.
How to book
Schools can book Sounds Lab as a single session or as part of a wider programme. Contact Surrey Arts to check dates and availability.
