Beats Lab is a music production course where young people learn to create original tracks using professional music technology. Open to all genres and experience levels, the course focuses on beat-making, digital composition, sampling, recording, and creative production in a supportive environment where young people lead their own learning. The course ends with a listening party, where participants showcase their original tracks, celebrate their progress, and build confidence as creators.
Why young people choose Beats Lab
Young people choose Beats Lab to gain real-world music production skills while creating tracks inspired by the genres they love. Learning from industry professionals, they progress at their own speed and grow in confidence as music makers. All participants gain access to their own music production suite during sessions. They are also eligible to hire a music production package to take home, as well as an Ableton Live Intro licence (music production software) to use at home.
Why schools choose Beats Lab
Schools choose Beats Lab because it offers an easy way to introduce students to music technology, especially where the school may lack expertise or equipment. It helps pupils who may not see themselves as musical to take part and grow in confidence. It also enables more musically experienced students to explore their creativity and expand their understanding of music production. This gives teachers a clear model for using music technology with whole classes.
What schools need
Schools only need to provide a classroom and access to power. We provide all the equipment needed for the sessions. If schools have computers as part of their music department, we can provide access to software.
How Beats Lab supports musical learning
Beats Lab helps young people understand how music works. They learn about rhythm, melody, and structure by producing their own original pieces in simple steps. Students hear their ideas straight away, which makes musical learning clear and enjoyable.
The course builds strong composition skills that link directly to classroom work. Students learn how to start an idea, shape it, improve it, and turn it into a finished piece. This supports Key Stage 2 and 3 music and helps prepare pupils for GCSE and A-level tasks.
Music technology is used as a tool for learning that can be applied to any style of music. It helps pupils listen carefully, spot patterns, and understand what makes music fit together. Teachers often find this boosts confidence, especially for pupils who struggle with notation.
Beats Lab has a clear structure. Each week focuses on one musical skill, such as rhythm, chords, melody, recording, or arranging. Pupils make steady progress and can see how their work improves over time.
The sessions also build wider skills. Students learn to listen, focus, solve problems, and work well with others. These habits support learning across the whole curriculum.
Parents value Beats Lab because it gives young people a safe and positive space to learn. Students work with trained tutors, use high-quality equipment, and create something they are proud to share at the end of the course.
For schools, Beats Lab offers a simple way to enrich the music curriculum. It works well alongside existing schemes and supports pupils with different learning needs and musical interests.
