For World EV Day (9 September), we’re celebrating installing over 800 public chargepoints across Surrey to support EV drivers, as well as those looking to make the switch.
Between 2023 and 2025, there has been a 50% increase in electric vehicles registered in Surrey, but not everyone can easily charge at home. Those who live in flats, houses without driveways, or rented accommodation, may not be able to install a chargepoint.
That’s why Surrey County Council, in partnership with Connected Kerb, has worked to install over 800 public chargepoints across Surrey. Almost 700 of those chargepoints are on-street, with many installed in high street locations or on residential roads where there is little or no off-street parking. Most of the on-street chargepoints installed are slow 7kwh, designed for overnight charging for local residents, rather than the on-the-go fast chargepoints you see at motorway services.
In addition, almost 150 lamp post column chargepoints have been installed, taking advantage of the existing electrical connections to quickly and easily install unobtrusive chargepoints for local residents.
Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth Cllr Matt Furniss, said: “EV ownership is increasing in Surrey so it’s vital we support that by providing accessible EV chargepoints for everyone. Switching to electric vehicles helps us reduce our air pollution and our emissions, making Surrey a cleaner, greener place. I’m delighted with the success of our electric vehicle chargepoint partnership, which is helping to deliver accessible charging for thousands of residents across the county.”
Chris Pateman-Jones, CEO of Connected Kerb, added: "Reaching more than 800 public chargers across Surrey is a fantastic milestone and a real example of what can be achieved when local authorities and industry work together. As more people make the switch to electric vehicles, it's vital that charging is available to everyone, not just those with a driveway. That's why we've focused on delivering convenient, reliable charging where people live, work and spend time.
"We're proud to partner with Surrey County Council to help make EV ownership more accessible for residents across the county. The growing use of these chargers shows that when you put charging where people need it, they use it. And with demand continuing to rise, we're excited to keep building on this success and making it easier for even more residents to choose electric.’'
Ottershaw resident, Alan, explains how the on-street chargepoints near him have enabled him to switch to electric.
The data shows the chargepoints are popular, with kwh usage increasing by 75% from June 2025 to June 2026. SCC is planning to install over 1,000 more EV chargepoints, so if you’d like to suggest a location for one, please add one to the online map for it to be considered.
To find an EV chargepoint near you, you can visit the Connected Kerb website, or look on Zap Map.
Surrey County Council also offers cable gully installations. Cable gullies are channels installed in the pavement that can be used to safely allow an EV charging cable to cross a pavement. They are suitable for people who are able to install a chargepoint at home but don’t have a driveway and can regularly park outside their home.
