Green light for safety improvements on the A319

Published: 09 July 2026

Following a successful bid, Surrey County Council has been awarded £1.3million from the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund to make the A319 Chertsey Road between Chobham and Ottershaw safer.

Proposals developed by Surrey County Council aim to reduce the risk and severity of collisions for all road users and to provide better infrastructure to make walking safer and more accessible on this route, which has been identified as high risk by The Road Safety foundation.

Measures include:

  • Reducing the existing 30mph speed limit to 20mph within the western extent of the scheme in Chobham (an extension of the existing 20 mph limit).
  • Reducing the speed limit from 50mph to 40mph along the mid-section of the route.
  • An extension of the existing 30mph speed limit in Ottershaw at the eastern extent of the scheme. Traffic calming measures will be provided to help reduce speeds where necessary.
  • The introduction of pedestrian crossing facilities in Chobham at the western extent of the scheme and a new footway along a section of verge already being used by pedestrians near Fairoaks Airport between Youngstroat Lane and Bonsey’s Lane.
  • New signage on bends and at the edges of roads to mitigate the risk and consequences of motor vehicles leaving the road and colliding with road-side objects at various locations along the route.

Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth said: “We welcome this additional funding to make travelling on the A319 safer and more reliable.

"Road safety is of paramount importance to Surrey County Council and the key objective of our Vision Zero Road Safety Strategy is to halve road deaths and serious injuries in Surrey by 2035.

"This funding builds on our own significant investment in highways schemes including £3m for road safety outside schools initiatives and the introduction of more 20mph schemes to encourage slower speeds, following careful consultation with local people.”

Design work will begin over the next year. The implementation phase will then become the responsibility of the new West Surrey Council after April 2027.
