A major roundabout in Guildford will undergo significant improvements to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, with construction due to begin in October.
Zebra crossings will be installed on every entry and exit point of Boxgrove roundabout, giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists, to provide safer travel to key local destinations including George Abbott School and Guildford Spectrum.
To minimise disruption to local residents and road users, there will be no traffic lights or road closures during the day and most of the construction works will take place overnight.
Local residents and groups were consulted on the scheme as part of a wider proposal in 2024, with the majority of respondents in support of this particular safety initiative, which will be funded by Active Travel England.
Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth said, “I am delighted that construction of the Boxgrove roundabout will soon get underway to help deliver safer journeys for everyone living and travelling around Guildford. The detailed design will look to balance the needs of all road users and ensure the surrounding area is safer and more accessible.
"This is part of our ongoing commitment to improve road safety and encourage more cycling and walking across our busy county. This was reflected in the announcement from Active Travel England last year, which awarded Surrey the second highest allocation of new funding in the south east, due to our ability to deliver active travel schemes.”
