Town and Parish Councils, and community, voluntary and faith groups, are being encouraged to apply for a share of £125,000 to deliver initiatives that strengthen local resilience to climate impacts.
Across Surrey, communities are experiencing increasing risks from extreme heat, flooding, and wildfire which can negatively impact infrastructure, the local economy and schools.
The new Community Resilience Grant funds projects that address and mitigate against these risks to help protect people and places. The programme includes:
- Support to create a Community Resilience Action Plan (£1,000 funding) - focused on specific risks to local people and the local area. To support the development of the plans, a toolkit and supporting resources have been developed in partnership with Surrey Prepared and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.
- Grant funding (up to £15,000) to then deliver the projects identified in the plan.
Marisa Heath, Cabinet Member for Environment & Planning at Surrey County Council said, “We’re acutely aware that many of the UK’s community spaces were not built to withstand some of the conditions we are now experiencing, as a result of climate change.
"These risks are projected to increase in frequency and severity as the atmosphere continues to warm.
"We’re delighted to be working with colleagues from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service to support and empower local groups to deliver on-the ground projects that will make a real difference to people and places.”
David Nolan, Area Commander, Prevention said, “We’re proud to be working with Surrey County Council to support local groups making a difference across Surrey. As the risk of wildfires, flooding and other extreme weather events continues to grow, these community projects will play a vital role in building resilience, protecting communities and keeping Surrey Prepared. The funding will help communities understand local risks, develop emergency plans and take action where it matters most."
Grants are open until 16 and 30 September 2026 respectively. More information about the scheme is available on the Together for Surrey website and residents are also invited to sign up for a drop-in session (4 August and 3 September 2026) to find out more.
