Investing in services that make our communities better
Our 2026/27 budget includes a £297 million capital investment programme to create new buildings and improve existing facilities that support everyday life for residents in Surrey.
These include places like schools and community buildings. These projects help make our towns safer, fairer, and better for everyone. With more than 80 projects happening, we are improving places where people live, learn, and get support.
Our Land and Property team work with construction partners to deliver these projects. Here are some of the things we’re working on:
Modernising our fire stations

We are spending around £13.8 million to update some of our fire stations and fire training facilities, so they are safer, stronger, and better for the environment.
New and upgraded stations will have improved training areas, better working spaces for firefighters, and easier access for the community.
They will use less energy because of features like improved insulation and low carbon heating. This helps look after the planet while keeping everyone safe.
New Supported Independent Living homes

We are building new homes for adults who need extra help and support, so they can live more independently. We have invested over £24 million to create three new Supported Independent Living sites.
These homes are modern and comfortable, with support available on site.
There are shared spaces, outdoor areas, and thoughtful design features to help people feel confident, happy, and part of their community.
More Supported Independent Living homes have been built in Byfleet, and some will soon be ready in Cobham.
New Special Educational Needs (SEN) Units for children with additional needs

We are spending £189 million between 2024 and 2029 to create more school places for children with additional needs and disabilities, and to improve alternative provision.
Part of this is creating new SEN units in mainstream schools around Surrey. These spaces are designed for children who need extra support, such as help with communication, autism, or more complex needs. The units have specialist classrooms and calm areas where pupils can learn in the way that works best for them. Being built in mainstream schools means children can stay close to home and be part of local school life.
Some schools already have new SEN (Special Educational Needs) units, like Dovers Green in Reigate and Guildford County School. We are also building more SEN spaces in Woking, Dorking, Staines, and Molesey, with more work in other schools starting later this year.
Other building projects around Surrey
Our Land and Property Team are working on many building projects across Surrey to improve local communities.
- Libraries across Surrey are being improved, and new community hubs have opened in Staines and Weybridge.
- We are building new children’s homes so young people can stay close to their friends, families, and schools.
- In Guildford, we are building Meadowcroft Lodge, our first extra care housing building. When it’s finished, it will have 59 flats for people aged 55 and over who need care and support.
- We are also upgrading Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller (GRT) sites across Surrey. This includes more reliable utilities, safer pathways, improved and new facilities, and nicer shared areas.
These are just some of the projects helping to make Surrey a better place for everyone.
From new school spaces to modern fire stations and improved supported homes, we will keep investing in projects that make a real difference to people every day.
