Making journeys to school safer

What is a School Street and is one coming to your area?

Road safety around schools is a key concern, and Surrey is committed to addressing it. We work with schools, parents and local residents to identify ways to make walking, cycling and scooting safer and more accessible. Our School Streets Programme is one of the measures we use to create safer, healthier streets during busy school times.

About School Streets

A School Street prioritises pedestrians and cyclists on roads outside schools at set times in the morning and afternoon. Parents and carers are asked to either walk, scoot or cycle with their children to school, or to park a little further away and walk the last few minutes of their journey.

The roads which are part of the School Street Zone temporarily close to vehicles and become a pedestrian and cycle zone during school drop off and pick up times. Exemptions from the restrictions are available for residents, carers, blue badge holders and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) school transport.

A School Street helps improve air quality at the school gates and makes it easier and safer to travel to and around the school. Visit the School Streets webpage for more information, including details about exemptions.

The results

Farnham Heath End School was the first to benefit from a School Street in April 2025 and is already proving to be a success, with a 62 per cent reduction in cars entering and exiting the road. In a school week prior to the scheme being introduced there were 1,227 vehicles turning in or out of Bullers Road at school drop off and pick up times, compared to 470 vehicles once the scheme was underway.

Potters Gate Church of England Primary School, in Farnham was the second school to benefit from our School Streets Programme.

Coming next

From Monday 11 May, four roads around Danetree Primary School in Ewell will operate as School Streets from 8am to 9am and 2.30pm to 3.45pm. This will be Surrey’s largest School Street Zone and will benefit hundreds of school children and families. Keep up to date with the changes on our Danetree School commonplace webpage.

Have your say on proposed School Streets

We are proposing to operate School Streets in Esher, Ewell and Guildford and would like to hear from anyone who would benefit or be affected by the changes.

Online engagement is open and we would like to hear from local residents, families and school communities on our proposals. Have your say on the proposals at:
