"Standing Firm in Power and Pride” with Surrey History Centre

October is Black History Month is a time to celebrate Black histories and stories.

It is also a time think about how they are represented in Surrey’s historic collections. From poets and soldiers to abolitionists and nurses, people of colour have lived in Surrey for hundreds of years. The collections at Surrey History Centre in Woking help bring their stories to life.

This month reminds us why it’s important to recognise the contributions of Black individuals and communities, many of which have been overlooked or misrepresented. Sharing these stories helps people connect with our collections, and new research can inspire and empower future generations.

Our collections and online Black History resources are freely accessible all year round. Visit Exploring Surrey's Past website for more details.

The Black History Month website features articles on a wide range of topics including:

  • African and pre-colonial history
  • slavery
  • sporting heroes
  • inspirational figures.

The theme for 2025 is “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.” One part of the theme, Service and Sacrifice, celebrates the vital work of people in healthcare, education, and humanitarian efforts.

The Biafran War (also known as the Nigerian Civil War) was a brutal conflict fought in Nigeria from 1967 to 1970.

Share your story

Finding records which show us that lived experience, even in more recent years, is challenging. If you can help to develop our collections and expand the dialogue about Black British presence in the county, we’d love to hear from you.

If you have stories or materials to share, please contact Surrey History Centre via shs@surreycc.gov.uk.
