Transformation of Basingstoke Canal towpath celebrated

A freshly upgraded stretch of the Basingstoke Canal towpath between Pirbright and Deepcut was officially launched in February, following the successful completion of a significant improvement project. Representatives from the Basingstoke Canal Authority and Surrey and Hampshire County Councils joined lead contractor Kenward to celebrate the transformation of a 3.4 kilometre section of this well‑used part of the canal.

Stretching between Woodham in Surrey and Greywell in Hampshire, the Basingstoke Canal spans more than 32 miles and includes 29 locks—most of which sit within Surrey. Built originally in the late 18th century, the canal is a popular leisure destination for walkers, cyclists and paddlers alike.

A Much Needed Upgrade

The 3.4 kilometre section between Pirbright and Deepcut had long required attention due to potholes, poor drainage, and localised bank erosion. The improvement works have:

  • Upgraded and levelled the towpath surface
  • Enhanced drainage capabilities
  • Stabilised areas of canal bank
  • Improved year round accessibility for all visitors

Thanks to the expertise of contractor Kenward, the construction phase progressed smoothly, allowing the reopening of this busy route earlier than anticipated.

Towpath Access

For safety and efficiency, the towpath was closed from the end of September to mid December 2025 between Locks 15 and 28. With the works now complete, full access has been restored and the towpath is once again being enjoyed by residents and visitors.
