Over 48,000 new trees planted across Surrey thanks to community effort
Surrey's tree planting season proved a great success in 2025/2026. Between November and February, local residents, volunteers, schools, charities, community groups and Surrey County Council (SCC) teams came together to plant an impressive 48,198 new trees across the county.
From school grounds to farms, community gardens to charity sites, people of all ages got involved, helping to boost biodiversity, create new habitats for wildlife and make Surrey an even greener place to live.
Key achievements from this season
- 48,198 trees planted across 140 sites
- 115 fruit trees added to 30 new community orchards
- 4,700 metres of new hedgerows planted
- 15 tree giveaway events held at libraries and Community Recycling Centres, handing 3,584 free trees to Surrey residents
These planting projects didn’t just create more green space, they also supported learning, wellbeing and stronger community connections.
Project highlights
Volunteers dig in at Change of Scene, Frensham
In December 2025, our Tree Planting and Establishment Team joined volunteers at Change of Scene, a charity offering animal assisted outdoor learning for young people unable to attend mainstream school. Together they planted 1,306 trees, creating new hedgerows that will link pockets of existing woodland and provide a living outdoor classroom for the children who visit the site.
Restoring nature at Elysian animal assisted therapy centre
At local Surrey charity, Elysian, teams planted 2,850 trees as part of a major hedgerow restoration project. The new planting helps reconnect wildlife habitats and supports the centre’s mission of offering calming, nature rich spaces for therapeutic and educational activities.
Freemantles School, Woking
Working with staff at this Council maintained school for children and young people with autism, the Tree Planting and Establishment Team helped deliver a full planting plan. Together, volunteers and students planted 350 young trees in new hedgerows and added 17 individual shade trees, supported by interactive assemblies and hands on workshops.
Shooting Star Children’s Hospice (Christopher’s), Guildford
Our Tree team worked alongside hospice volunteers to plant 552 trees and install 90 metres of new hedgerow, plus two sensory ornamental trees for the children’s garden. As the hedge grows, it will support wildlife, soften the landscape and help screen a nearby fencing line.
Moor Lane Farm (Woking Farm)
At Moor Lane Farm, a collaboration between SCC, the tenant farmer and a wide mix of local partners—including corporate volunteers, the Halow Group, WEAct and local residents—resulted in 3,756 new trees and three new hedgerows. It’s a powerful example of how community involvement can create lasting benefits for nature.
