South East Regional Children in Care Council event

Our care experienced young people attended the South East Regional Children in Care Council where they joined other children and adults to share ideas and help make things better for everyone in care. The whole event was about one important message: listening to young people and making sure no one is left behind.

Workshops, activities and big conversations

Young people led the day. They joined fun workshops and activities. They talked about what matters to them and what they want to change around topics such as friendships or siblings' relationships. Their ideas will help shape work happening across the country, including work with the Department for Education.

Each local area shared projects they are proud of. Some talked about giving welcome bags and blankets to children when they enter care. Others shared ideas like young people taking over the CEO’s office for a day.

Surrey Youth Voice at the heart of decisions

We shared that our Corporate Parenting Board is co chaired by a care experienced young person. This means young people help make big decisions at the top level in Surrey.

Young people said they felt listened to, confident and happy to meet others with similar experiences. Many said they would like this event to happen more than once a year.

The message from the day was clear: when young people are heard and their insight is acted on, meaningful change follows.
