How were the estimated costs calculated?

The figures below show estimated costs for different types of adult social care. They are based on data from Lottie and The Homecare Association and are meant to give a general idea of what care may cost.

We’ve included average weekly, monthly and yearly costs for care in:

  • residential care homes
  • nursing care homes
  • care provided in your own home

Care home costs

The average weekly costs were:

  • residential care home: £1,501 per week
  • nursing care home: £1,647 per week

To calculate monthly and yearly costs, we used:

  • 4.345 weeks per month
  • 52.142 weeks per year

This gives approximate totals of:

Care typeMonthly costYearly cost
Residential care home£6,522£78,265
Nursing care home£7,126£85,878
Combined average£6,839£82,071

Since we don’t know each person’s situation or preferences, we worked out an average weekly cost of £1,574. This combines the costs of residential and nursing care homes.

Home-based care costs

For care provided at home, we used the current average hours people we support have care at home:

  • £28.53 per hour
  • 14 hours of care per week
  • 4.345 weeks per month
  • 52.142 weeks per year

This is the cost for a single care worker. Weekends and nighttime support may be higher.

This results in estimated costs of:

FrequencyCost
Per week£399
Per month£1,734
Per year£20,804

  • the type of provider you choose

Actual adult social care costs in Surrey will depend on your individual needs and circumstances. Not everyone pays for their own care, although most people will pay something towards their care. Some people might qualify for full or partial funding. We carry out financial assessments to determine eligibility. Find out more about this at Paying for care.

Planning ahead is still valuable even if you get funded care. This means that your preferences and needs will be understood. The numbers shown here don’t reflect the council’s actual payments or what we would pay in each case.

The average care costs shown here include a wide mix of care homes, some that run efficiently and others that are more expensive to operate. The more expensive homes often charge higher fees, which may be above what the council usually pays.

Surrey County Council sets its usual care home rates based on fair, efficient providers who offer good-quality care at a reasonable cost. This means the council’s rates are often lower than the average prices charged across the wider market.

These figures are for general information only and don’t show what the council will pay in any individual case. For more details on how care costs are worked out, see Surrey residential and nursing care for older people cost modelling approach.
