What's new on our website
We're constantly adding and updating our website. Below is a summary of updates and additions.
Autumn 2010
- Search results
Following comments from our website users we have improved the results from our website search and it is now possible to filter results by topic. We have analysed the most popular search words and phrases to ensure that these return the most appropriate results. Documents, such as PDF (portable document format) files, are also included in the results and are now more clearly labelled.
- Licensing online (EU Services Directive)
We have expanded our 'licences, permits and consents' index as a result of the EU Services Directive, which aims to break down barriers to cross border trade in services between countries in the EU. The Directive is intended to make it easier for service providers to offer their services to customers in other EU countries.
- Jobs
The jobs section of our website has been redesigned to make it easier to search for job vacancies at Surrey County Council. We've also added a selection of job profiles from employees across the organisation.
Summer 2010
- Surrey 2012: Making the most of opportunities from the 2012 Games.
We have created a dedicated website to highlight the benefits of choosing Surrey for London 2012 pre-Games training facilities. You can also find out how Surrey residents, businesses and other organisations can benefit from the London 2012 legacy.
- eBooks and eAudiobooks
You can now download free eBooks and eAudiobooks via our website 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Non-members can join the library online.
- e-Petitions
You can now submit petitions online to Surrey County Council or your local district or borough council. This new facility has been implemented jointly by us and the other local councils in Surrey. Using the internet to create an e-petition allows a potentially much wider audience to view your petition and gives you the opportunity to gather more names to support the petition.
Spring 2010
- Send to a friend
An email facility has been added to the bottom of web pages that enables you to easily send a web page link to your friends, family and colleagues. Give it a try!
- Webcasting
Since February 2010 we have begun to webcast a number of council meetings. This means that you can watch certain meetings live from the comfort of your own home. Video footage from previous meetings is kept online for approximately six months, so you can always catch-up later if you can't watch live. You can also see what future webcasts are planned.
Autumn 2009
- Surrey Matters on Twitter
Surrey Matters is our residents magazine, which is delivered to 510,000 homes across the county.
- What's behind the website banner?
The banner image at the top of each web page is now 'click-able', so you can find out what each image is about.
- Social bookmarking
A social bookmarking button has been added to the bottom of each page. This allows you to bookmark or share our pages using popular sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
Summer 2009
- Photo gallery
Are you a keen photographer? Have you taken any photos of Surrey? Why not submit your favourite images to our online photo gallery. Your image might be chosen to feature in the banner at the top of our website!

- Follow us on Twitter!
We are currently using Twitter to broadcast details of our latest news, events, job vacancies and activities in libraries. We have multiple profiles on Twitter, so you can choose to follow the ones that interest you most.
Spring 2009
- We are continuing to improve the navigation of our site following your feedback.
Winter 2008
We have made major changes to our website, following extensive user-testing and taking into account feedback from our customers.
Our home page has changed to display forthcoming events from around the county, more news and a special features section. We have re-designed the look and feel of the site and improved the information architecture, to make it easier for you to find the information you need quickly and easily.
We have created two new sections:
We have pulled information from across the site to feature in three sections:
Spring 2008
We made more improvements to our website during the winter period:
- Listen to our webpages
An exciting new addition to our website means that you can now make our web pages talk to you. We have recently enabled our website to make use of two new speech tools – Dixerit Plus and Browsealoud. Both these tools allow you to listen to our pages being read aloud by an automated voice. Best of all, both tools are completely free to use.
- Website improvement
We have begun to rebuild the website in accordance with web standards - as part of this we have begun to standardise text size and remove underlining from hyperlinks (which was causing difficulty for some users with visual or learning disabilities).
- Printing pages
This is now easier, and produces a properly formatted, clearer document. Just select 'File' and 'print' from your browser menu
