Web standard - capitalisation in page titles

Mandatory

  • Only capitalise the first word and any proper nouns (such as the names of places or people) in the title.
  • All other words in the title should be in lower case.

Examples

  • Wrong: Winter Maintenance Schedules (only first word should be capitalised).
  • Correct: Winter maintenance schedules.
  • Wrong: How to get to guildford (names of places or people should be capitalised).
  • Correct: How to get to Guildford.
  • Wrong: Local Education Authority appoints new Director (neither local education authority nor director are proper nouns).
  • Correct: Local education authority appoints new director.
  • Wrong: Woodland in North Surrey (north is an adjective, not part of the place name).
  • Correct: Woodland in north Surrey.

Why we have this web standard

Style consistency - this standard is mandatory for style reasons.

We want web pages to have be consistent across the website. Whilst there are a number of different ways that a page title could be written we have chosen to standardise on one and apply that to all pages.
