Twister Youth Clubs is supported by the Surrey Youth Development Services and largely funded by Youth Opportunities Funding (YOF).
Twister offers a safe space for LGBTQ young people to meet and socialise and provide information and guidance when needed. The youth clubs offer IT facilities,TV, DVDs, pool table, music, arts, catering, publications, information and leaflets. In some cases Freeview, PS2 and DJ equipment are also available.
Members are encouraged to contribute to the program and help raise funding to keep the project sustainable and exciting. The members have voted to keep the Twister locations confidential for their peace of mind, however this has not stopped them from joining in other borough youth development projects which are offered to them by the neighbourhood workers involved in Twister.
There are currently three Twister youth clubs; one in Guildford, one in Redhill and the other in Spelthorne and funding is available for more in other boroughs of Surrey.
The LGBTQ youth clubs were named 'Twister' by the young people who also designed the logo. The name Twister was originally derived from the well-known game where the contestants contort to fit themselves into the specified primary colours of society. The weather element was also observed as describing sexuality and teenage development as a tornado of emotions.
There is a full and diverse program every week which the young people contribute to plus regular features such as a pool table, IT facilities (including AppleMac), PS2, Freeview, DVD, music, arts, current publications, leaflets, free fruit, drinks and quite often birthday cake!
