There are specific legal requirements regarding the employment of children under school leaving age. These are described in the documents below which you can download in PDF format. There are separate guides for young people, parents and employers. There is also a single page poster aimed at young people.

You can also download below our special edition newsletter from July 2008 which was dedicated to child employment issues.

You can find additional advice for parents of children employed in the show business and entertainment industry in the last download listed below. Further guidance on this particular type of employment is available.

    This document highlights the key requirements for employers when employing children of compulsory school age. It includes information on the maximum number of hours that can be worked, and the type of work that is permitted.
  • SSCB Child Employment Parents Guide (216.0 KB)
    This guide gives parents information about the work their child is able to do whilst in compulsory education. It also provides information as to the responsibilities of the employer.
  • SSCB Child Employment Guide for Young People (146.9 KB)
    This guide gives children and young people information about rules regarding the type of work that they are able to do whilst in compulsory education. It includes information on the hours allowed to be worked, and the requirement to obtain a work permit from the Child Employment Team.

    This single page poster is aimed at young people under school leaving age and provides brief infomation on the law regarding work.

    Surrey Safeguarding Children Board Newsletter special edition. This edition of the newsletter was created especially for Child Employment Week 2008 and contains information about child employment in Surrey. It also includes details of the legal requirements and obligations of employers, including those involved in child modelling and the entertainment industry.
