Residential and nursing home care

There will be times when some people find it difficult to look after themselves at home. This can happen gradually, or as a result of sudden illness or accident. In many cases it may happen after a stay in hospital.

Many people in this position will be able to stay at home with help from families or friends and support from social care services and the NHS, such as home care or visits from the district nurse. Other people might be helped by a move to sheltered housing or another type of accommodation more suited to their needs.

Some people may still find that they cannot cope and may need to consider taking the step of moving into a care home. This may be a residential care home providing meals and personal care or a nursing home that must have qualified nurses on the premises. Sometimes people who need to move into a care home are able to make their own arrangements and cover the costs. Local authorities are responsible for helping those people who cannot do so.
