Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy carry out functional assessments and arrange for provision of assistive equipment or alternatives to home environment for your safety and independence.

If you need help from someone else to do day-to-day tasks, occupational therapists can give advice, for example about:

  • getting in and out of bed
  • using the stairs or bath.
They can also give ongoing advice on maintaining or regaining your independence.

To check if you are eligible for these services, you should telephone the contact centre on 0300 200 1005 to discuss this with an advisory officer if you feel you require an occupational therapy service.

You will then receive a telephone assessment - FACS (fair access to care services) via the advisory officer. If you meet eligibility, you will be referred and eventually receive an occupational therapy assessment and provision of equipment for your eligible need. There is no charge for this equipment.

Equipment covers not only mechanical devices but minor adaptations such as rails etc.

If your need is to do with mobility, ie walking, you need to talk to your GP for a physiotherapy referral.

For additional information, you can also contact adult social care.

Alternatively, you can fill in our online form but please note that although we try to respond as quickly as possible, it may take up to five working days for us to reply.
