Surrey County Council have recently been going through a reorganisation of staff, including the closing of a couple of principle offices, and consequently relocated people to other offices. As part of this process car-sharing has really come into it's own. With more people moving into buildings, inevitably there has been greater pressure on the number of car parking spaces available. So, a number of car sharer only bays have been introduced, to encourage people to car share and take up less room in the car park. Getting two people in for one space reduces pressure on the car park and means people travel to work more sustainably.
So far over 24 people have grouped together in pairs and threes to use the car sharer bays. As demand increases more bays will be added into the scheme. In the last three months the Council has seen a 71% increase in the number of members registered to the car sharing scheme.
