Requests for new and temporary signs
The council recognises the importance of accurate, appropriate signing for safe navigation to a range of destinations, but also the distraction and clutter that can result from too many signs. We have reviewed our signing policy to reflect safety, environmental and business concerns about signing, together with new opportunities for local decision making about new signs. Our new signs policy is to help you understand why and how we do things.
Signs that Surrey County Council will sign and fund and signs that are not eligible:
Where traffic management and safety benefits can be demonstrated and funding allows, Surrey County Council will provide signing for traffic to:
Greater emphasis will be given to replacing road signs that, if missing, prevent law enforcement e.g. speed limit signs.
- Transport Interchanges – e.gs bus stations, railway stations
- Hospitals and other medical facilities such as General Practitioners (GPs), drop-in-centres and clinics
- Visitor facilities (e.g. car parks, tourist information centres)
- Public leisure and sport facilities (e.g. concert halls museums and sports centres)
- Concentrated areas of single land use (e.g. industrial estates, science parks, town centres, and out-of-town retail parks over 10,000m2)
- Public buildings, libraries, council offices etc.
- Police and fire stations
- Village Halls
- Schools
- Preferred lorry route signing
- Cycle route signing
- Tourist Destinations (Brown and White Signs)
There may be others. This list does not confirm automatic provision of a sign.
Surrey County Council will not normally be expected to provide permanent signs for the following:
- Golf clubs
- Hotels
- Guest Houses
- Restaurants
- Public Houses
- Garden Centres
- Permanent Caravan Sites
- Cinemas
- Theatres and concert venues
Minimising The Number of Signs
Reducing street clutter is part of the Department for Transports review of traffic signs that is expected to provide guidance for auditing and removing unnecessary traffic signs.
