Work experience at Surrey Arts Wardrobe

coloured threads

Work experience provides an opportunity for young people in full time education to gain an insight into the world of work.

Surrey Arts Wardrobe offers two types of work experience placement:

  • Placements of one or two weeks' duration for students in Years 10 and 11
  • Placements of more flexible length for students taking further or higher education.
The wardrobe manager and the senior wardrobe assistant will oversee the placement and provide support and monitor the progress.. For staff profiles see our about us

What to expect

Students are given tasks and activities to complete that will provide them with first hand experience of working with costumes and give relevant experience. We try our best to tailor the work placement experience to individuals interests, however there are certain tasks that need to be done day to day and as with all jobs, there may be some things that are less enjoyable than others.

The advantages of a placement with us

A work experience placement at the Surrey Arts Wardrobe provides many benefits. Including:
  • enhancing understanding of the workplace
  • gaining very useful experience
  • sharpening key skills that will maximise future employability
  • developing self confidence
  • Informing career choices

How to arrange a work placement

If you are interested in a work placement with us the first thing to do is contact us. You can do this via telephone if you would like to discuss the placement, and then follow up your telephone conversation with an email containing your contact details, institution, what course you are taking and the dates you are looking for.

Work placements for those in compulsory education

Placements are allocated on a first come, first served basis for those in compulsory education. If you are still at school your placement may be arranged through your school this can be through HCS or Shape. With HCS you may book though their online system or book with us directly.
We will confirm with you if we have the availability to accept a work placement student for the dates that you have requested.

In all cases you will need to send us the appropriate forms to fill in and return to you. We will send you a pre-placement letter and parental consent form a few weeks prior to your work placement.

Further or Higher education placements

If you are in further or higher education or are looking for a longer of more specific work placement we may ask you to attend an informal pre-placement interview. If you are doing a post 16 course your institution may have guidelines for you to follow and forms for us to complete: it is your responsibility to make sure that these are followed and completed on time.

Please be aware that the wardrobe can get very busy and that there are many claims on staff time so we may not be able to respond immediately to you. Contact us
