Fire safety for teenagers

group of teenagers

The use of candles amongst teenagers is growing and, as a result, so are the risks of a fire in the home. Increased social interaction may raise the risk of fires through smoking, using matches or lighters and the use of barbecues during the summer months.

In the case of a fire breaking out the whole family, including older children, needs to know what to do. An escape plan is a must. Having an escape plan will help your household to act quickly if you hear the bleeping of your smoke detector.

There is a great need to be aware of kitchen safety, as this room is the origin of a large proportion of fires in the home. Teenagers who have left home should also be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.

At certain times of year the dangers to teenagers increase. A classic example is 5 November with the associated dangers of fireworks.

All Surrey households can receive a free home fire safety visit that looks to minimise the risk of fire in the home.

See our fire prevention and detection pages for other information on fire safety issues.
