Fire safety for students

student carrying books

The use of candles amongst students is growing and, as a result, so are the risks of a fire in the home. Increased social opportunities, with the consumption of alcohol and the possible consumption of other substances, can increase the risks of fire through smoking, using matches or lighters and the use of barbecues during the summer months.

In the case of a fire breaking out in shared accommodation, everyone needs to know what to do. An escape plan is a must. Having an escape plan will help you and the other occupants of the house, flat or halls of residence to act quickly when the smoke detector is activated. If you have a fire, remember the correct procedure when calling 999 for assistance.

There is a great need to be aware of kitchen safety, as this room is the origin of a large proportion of fires in the home. Students, having left home, should also be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.

At certain times of year the dangers to students can increase. A classic example is 5 November with the associated dangers of mixing the use of alcohol with fireworks.

All Surrey households can receive a free home fire safety visit that looks to minimise the risk of fire in the home.

See our fire prevention and detection pages for other information on fire safety issues.
